Sydney V. Smith is 28 and since 2011 has been extending her neck by encasing it in 11 copper rings. She wants to become a “giraffe woman.” Since an early age Sydney has been fascinated with body modification and has always thought she had a long neck. While in middle school she would wrap coat hangers around her neck when she went to sleep to try and extend her neck more. When she decided to make the jump and do the copper rings she was self-conscious and hid them as much as possible. In 2011 her neck was starting to be unable to support her head so she had to choose to continue or stop. She chose to get the rings and soldered them around he neck. Sydney estimates her neck has been stretched to 10 to 11 inches long. There is a screw that can be removed to free her from the rings in case of an emergency.
